Standing in Solidarity Against Anti-Asian Violence

By Sydney French (280)

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a large rise in instances of anti-Asian violence in the United States. On Tuesday, March 16, 2021, there was an attack killing eight people from three different spas in Atlanta, Georgia. As of now, it is known that six of these women were of Asian descent. This event raised tension and fear in the Asian-American community, as these communities  are in fear of being targeted for their race. The police are still looking for the suspect. In response to the attack, President Biden said during a video conference with Ireland’s Prime Minister that “The question of motivation is still to be determined, but whatever the motivation was here, I know that Asian-Americans are very concerned.” However, in his prime-time speech, President Biden condemned hate crimes against the Asian-American community and addressed how they have struggled in the past year.

In the Central community, it is vital that we stand together in solidarity. We must spark conversation both in and out of the classroom in discussing the events of this attack and what we can do to help the situation and prevent violence and hatred like this from occurring in the future.
